Paranoia in the Bush is comprised of field recordings made at Bundanon Trust, an artistic residence set deep in the bushland on Australia’s south coast. The work and its title reflects a common sensation for novice solo bushwalkers; the sometimes comforting, sometimes chilling sensation of believing that you’re not quite alone. Rather than portraying the sounds of the wild as they really are, the piece gets inside the listener’s head both metaphorically and psycho-acoustically: the phenomenon of In-Head Acoustic Imaging creates a cavernous eco-system inside the listener’s head. Paranoia features sharp cuts between real and imagined sounds, frenetic pacing, and occasional moments of tranquil beauty.

Paranoia in the Bush exists as two slightly different mixes, one for headphones and one for general stereo listening. In-Head Acoustic Imaging is exclusively experienced with headphones. This mix was composed specifically to feature this phenomenon. It is recommended that good quality headphones are used to fully experience this work.
